Origins
Founded by Oren Etzioni
Oren Etzioni was the founding CEO of the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) from 2013 to 2022, where he worked with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen to establish AI2 as a globally respected research institute.
In 2014 Oren created the AI2 Incubator as a unit of the research institute, and led the first two successful projects (Xnor and Kitt), before partnering with Jacob Colker and Vu Ha in 2016 to expand it into the thriving independent organization that it is today. Yifan Zhang joined the leadership team in 2023.

Strategic Relationship with AI2
We are proud to maintain a strategic relationship with AI2 that allows us to lean into the expertise of 200+ researchers, engineers, professors, and staff who have collectively published nearly 1,000+ research papers at premier AI conferences, with 30+ best paper awards.
Known as inventors of seminal works in the field of artificial intelligence such as Yolo and ELMo, AI2 is a strong magnet for top technical talent, with 10,000+ people from around the world applying for jobs at AI2 each year.
Our Technical Director Oren Etzioni founded and led AI2 as CEO for 9 years. Vu Ha was a founding member of AI2 and led the development of Semantic Scholar from an idea to its public launch. And many of our key advisors have been heavily involved with AI2 since the beginning.
In 2022, AI2 Incubator spun out of AI2 as an independent entity.
